A literary classic and one of the vanishingly few dystopian books I truly like (possibly the only one), it was a revelation to read again since last time we did I was in Elementary School. Hence I found I appreciated many things about it – both as an adult and simply being a far more experienced reader – that I had not before. Namely incredulity at how the Builders hid the Instructions for Egress without a single fail-safe against human error! That and how every element of Ember was perfectly calibrated to keep its people from straying until the time lock sprung. But of course the true pleasure was walking and running with Lina Mayfleet and Doon Harrow again as they doggedly reassembled chewed up directions to find a way out to a world of light and green.
