I have started The Waking Fire, book one of Anthony Ryan's The Draconis Memoria trilogy.
I admit to having Grimdark suspicions regarding this one, as anything compared to GRRM's A Song of Ice and Fire is, for me, not exactly a ringing endorsement. Yet also have people compared him Robert Jordan’s The Wheel of Time which, for me, is. While others say it is "part Indiana Jones, part Pirates of the Caribbean, and part Mistborn" with an added chunk of steampunk naval fiction. Thus, since like Lizanne Lethridge – Blood-blessed spy and assassin on a secret mission which seems to be aimed at preventing war – I am also incurably curious, I could not let so unique a Fantasy pass by without giving it a worthy try.
We shall see not only where the journey takes me but if I choose to follow it to the end for, like all books under Grimdark suspicion, I do not promise to finish it. That being said and regardless of outcome, Ryan's storytelling skill is already clearly beyond reproach.
